Escritor británico. Se educó en Rugby School y Oxford, pero dejó ambas instituciones por diferencias con las autoridades. Fue un clasicista que escribió muchas de sus obras en latín. A pesar de que produjo poesía lírica, obras de teatro y poemas heroicos, se le recuerda principalmente por sus Conversaciones imaginarias (5 vol., 1824–53), diálogos en prosa entre personajes de la historia (1824–53). Pasó gran parte de su vida en Francia e Italia.
